After more than 10 years planning weddings in Portugal for international couples, we’ve worked with couples from across the United States, particularly from New York, California, New Jersey and Texas.

And while every wedding is different, the questions American couples ask us at the beginning of the planning process are often surprisingly similar.

How much does a wedding in Portugal cost? Should we choose the Algarve or Lisbon? Do we need to visit Portugal before the wedding? How early should we start planning? Can we legally get married there? And perhaps most importantly: how do you plan an entire wedding in another country when you live in the US?

Why Are So Many American Couples Choosing Portugal for Their Destination Wedding?

Portugal has become increasingly attractive to American couples looking for a European destination wedding without choosing one of the more expected European wedding destinations.

The appeal isn’t just one thing.

There’s the climate, particularly in southern Portugal. The coastline. Historic palaces and centuries-old buildings. Incredible food and wine. Beautiful landscapes. Beaches. And a sense of history and character that is difficult to recreate elsewhere.

But there is also something less tangible.

Portugal still feels genuine.

English is widely spoken in the wedding and hospitality industries, Portuguese people are known for their hospitality, and couples often tell us that the country feels relaxed and welcoming from the moment they arrive.

For American guests, the wedding also becomes an opportunity to experience Portugal as part of a larger European trip.

And that changes the wedding itself.

It stops being simply one day and becomes an experience everyone has travelled across the Atlantic to share.

How Much Does a Destination Wedding in Portugal Cost?

This is usually one of the first questions we receive from American couples — and understandably so.

For the weddings we typically plan, a realistic starting point is approximately €50,000–€100,000, depending on guest count, venue, suppliers, design and the number of events involved.

More elaborate luxury weddings can range from approximately €100,000 to €300,000 or more. Guest count makes a significant difference. Many of our American weddings have between 80 and 180 guests, and a three-day celebration for 150 guests naturally requires a very different budget from an intimate single-day wedding for 50.

Portugal should no longer be viewed as a “cheap” wedding destination. What it can offer, however, is excellent value for the level of quality and experience available.

American couples are often surprised by what their budget can create here — from exceptional venues and food to design, florals and guest experiences. The important distinction is value rather than price.

  

Should You Hire Your Wedding Planner Before Choosing the Venue?

Yes — ideally, you should.

One of the most common mistakes we see couples make is contacting or booking venues before speaking to a wedding planner. It feels logical to choose the venue first. After all, you need somewhere to get married.

But the venue affects almost every other part of your wedding: logistics, design possibilities, supplier access, accommodation, transportation, curfews, weather contingency plans and ultimately your budget. A beautiful venue on Instagram may not necessarily be the right venue for your particular wedding.

An experienced local planner can help you shortlist venues based not simply on appearance, but on what will actually work for your guest count, priorities and budget.

That can save weeks of research — and prevent expensive mistakes.

Algarve vs Lisbon & Sintra: Where Should You Get Married?

This is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make. Both regions offer extraordinary venues, but very different destination wedding experiences.

Getting Married in the Algarve

The Algarve is particularly appealing to couples who want their wedding to feel like a destination holiday. You have beautiful coastline, beaches, resorts, private estates and venues ranging from relaxed seaside settings to sophisticated luxury properties.

One of its biggest advantages is the climate. The Algarve generally offers a long wedding season, approximately April through October, and the weather tends to be more stable than in other parts of Portugal.

It is also relatively easy for guests to navigate once they arrive. Compared with the Lisbon metropolitan area, there is less traffic and less complexity moving large groups between locations.

For couples imagining several days by the sea with their closest friends and family, the Algarve can work exceptionally well.

Getting Married in Lisbon or Sintra

Lisbon and Sintra offer something different.

If you’re drawn to Portuguese history, architecture and palaces, this region has some extraordinary possibilities. Sintra in particular has a completely different atmosphere from the Algarve: romantic, historic, lush and dramatic.

The climate is less predictable than southern Portugal, which is one reason we particularly like May and September for weddings in the Lisbon/Sintra area.

Neither option is “better”. The right choice depends on the experience you want your guests to have.

When Should You Start Planning a Destination Wedding in Portugal?

For American couples, we generally recommend beginning the planning process around 12–18 months before the wedding. That gives you enough time to find the right venue, secure key suppliers and give guests plenty of notice to organize international travel.

Some weddings can absolutely be planned in less time. But if you have a specific venue, date or supplier in mind — particularly during peak season — starting earlier gives you considerably more choice. Once the venue and key suppliers are secured, the planning becomes a gradual process rather than one enormous list of decisions.

A Typical Portugal Destination Wedding Planning Timeline

While every wedding develops differently, the first stage usually focuses on the decisions that affect everything else.

That means defining your approximate guest count and budget, choosing your wedding planner and region, selecting the venue and securing the key suppliers.

From there, the planning gradually moves into design, guest experience, logistics, menus, rentals, stationery, entertainment and all the details that bring the celebration together.

For American couples, much of this happens remotely through email and video calls. Your planner effectively becomes your presence in Portugal — visiting venues, meeting suppliers and managing the details locally while you continue your normal life in the US.

Do You Need to Visit Portugal Before Your Wedding?

Technically, an entire destination wedding can be planned remotely.

But we recommend visiting Portugal at least once during the planning process whenever possible. There are things photographs and video simply can’t communicate.

The feeling of a venue. The distances between spaces. The surrounding area. The quality of the food. How the light changes throughout the day.

And interestingly, one of the things our American couples tell us most often is that the venues are even more beautiful in person. Ideally, we like having two opportunities to meet our couples in Portugal: one during the planning process and again immediately before the wedding, often around the rehearsal or pre-wedding events.

Planning a Wedding in Portugal From America: Expect a Different Pace

This is something American couples rarely anticipate. Portugal operates at a different pace.

Response times from venues and suppliers may sometimes feel slower than what you’re accustomed to in the United States.

That doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong. Part of working with a local wedding planner is having someone who understands how the industry operates here — who knows when to wait, when to follow up and who to call when something needs to move. Without that local knowledge, the difference in pace can become frustrating.

With the right planning structure around you, it simply becomes part of working in another country.

Planning a Three-Day Destination Wedding in Portugal

For many American couples, flying everyone to Portugal for a single wedding day doesn’t make much sense. That’s why many destination weddings we plan now take place over approximately three days.

Day One: Welcome Dinner or Rehearsal Dinner

Guests arrive, reconnect and settle into Portugal. This first event is often intentionally more relaxed than the wedding itself.

Day Two: The Wedding

The main celebration: ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner and party.

Day Three: Farewell Event

A relaxed brunch, pool gathering or another informal event before guests begin travelling home or continuing their holiday. The events don’t need to feel like three versions of the same wedding.

In fact, they shouldn’t.Each can have its own atmosphere and purpose while still feeling connected to the overall celebration.

A Real Three-Day Wedding in Portugal: Gina & Alex

In June 2026, we planned Gina and Alex’s celebration as a three-day wedding experience.

Rather than asking guests to travel for one single event, the wedding became several opportunities for everyone to spend time together.

The first day allowed guests to arrive and connect. The wedding day became the centrepiece of the celebration. And the final event gave everyone another opportunity to enjoy Portugal together before the weekend ended.

This is one of the reasons we love multi-day destination weddings.

After travelling such a long distance, time together becomes one of the greatest luxuries you can give your guests.

Can Americans Legally Get Married in Portugal?

Yes, it is possible for foreign couples to marry legally in Portugal.

However, many of our American couples choose a simpler route:

They complete their legal civil marriage in the United States and hold a symbolic ceremony in Portugal.

This removes much of the administrative complexity and gives couples complete freedom over the ceremony itself.

A symbolic ceremony can still feel every bit as meaningful.

Some couples choose a professional celebrant, while others ask a close friend or family member to conduct the ceremony.

For many destination weddings, that personal connection makes the ceremony even more special.

Choosing Wedding Vendors in Portugal

Most of the suppliers we work with are based in Portugal.

There is an exceptional wedding industry here, and working locally generally makes sense both logistically and financially.

There are occasions when we work with suppliers elsewhere in Europe, particularly photographers or videographers, depending on the couple’s preferred style.

For certain entertainment concepts — such as headline bands — international suppliers may also be brought into Portugal.

The goal isn’t to make every supplier local.

It’s to build the right team for the wedding.

Bringing 100+ Guests From the USA to Portugal

International guest logistics can feel intimidating, but this is one of the areas where advance planning makes an enormous difference.

For accommodation and transportation, we work with a travel agency partner who can assist guests with the practical side of travelling to Portugal.

For Algarve weddings, guests may fly directly into Faro or arrive through Lisbon. Some American guests choose to spend a few days in Lisbon before the wedding and then travel south to the Algarve.

The drive from Lisbon to the Algarve is approximately 2½–3 hours, depending on the destination and traffic, and train connections are also available.

For a wedding of around 100 American guests, our first priorities are straightforward: Secure the right venue and secure the key suppliers. Once those foundations are in place, the wider guest experience can be built around them.

What Should You Know Before Booking a Wedding Venue in Portugal?

A beautiful venue is only the beginning. Before booking, make sure you understand what the venue hire actually includes, its catering and beverage requirements, music curfews, setup and breakdown times, supplier access, accommodation and transportation options.

And always ask about Plan B. Even in Portugal, weather can’t be guaranteed. Your rain plan shouldn’t feel like a disappointing alternative to the wedding you wanted — it should be a space you’d genuinely be happy to use.

Historic venues can also have specific restrictions around décor, candles, structures, sound and access, which is another reason we recommend speaking to your wedding planner before committing to a venue.

What Are the Best Months for a Wedding in Portugal?

For the Algarve, the main wedding season generally runs from April through October, with the region offering some of the most reliable weather in Portugal.

For Lisbon and Sintra, we particularly like May and September. But the best month depends on more than weather. Your venue, guest comfort, tourism levels and the type of celebration you’re planning should all be part of the decision.
